Archeological sensation during renovation of Promenadengevierts in Linz – construction work on schedule

The renovation of the Landestheater on Linz’s Promenade not only brings architectural and technical innovation, but also opens a fascinating window into the city’s past: during the excavation work for the new event venue, an important area was archaeologically investigated—with spectacular results.

Initial finds from the Roman period prove that the city center was settled early on:

• Roman roof tiles, underfloor heating elements, tableware, a decorated clothing pin
• A bronze coin bearing the image of Emperor Hadrian and the goddess Diana – a unique find
• Exposed wall structures that indicate a Roman bathhouse or residential building

“We are fighting our way back more than 2100 years at this site,” says state archaeologist Stefan Traxler, who is leading the excavations.

DELTA is accompanying the project as Construction Supervision in a consortium with Neumayer Project Management GmbH. Construction progress remains assured even during the excavations:

“The four-month break ends at the end of September – during this peak phase, the excavation pit and shell construction will be pushed forward. The archaeological excavations are proceeding according to schedule. The special civil engineering work has been completed, and the construction site will be handed over to the construction company after the archaeological excavations have been completed – the completion of the shell construction as the next milestone is assured.”

A large-scale excavation in the heart of Linz – history meets the future: Good relations with the archaeologists and the clear zoning of the construction sites prevent delays. According to the current project status, the planned opening date in fall 2027 and the budget of €57.9 million remain unchanged.
