Kuwait’s Historic State Residence in Vienna Sustainably Revitalized

The historic residence of the State of Kuwait in Vienna has undergone extensive renovation and functional expansion. The project combines a sensitive approach to the existing neoclassical structure with contemporary architecture, sustainable building technology, and a prestigious redesign.

 

Preserving historical quality and building for the future

The revitalization focused on preserving the architectural quality of the existing structure while creating the conditions for contemporary use. The historic interiors were carefully restored, and the floor plans were reorganized for greater functionality. High-quality materials, improved fire protection, and barrier-free access contribute to a sustainable overall concept.

The architectural interventions are deliberately integrated into the existing building fabric. The newly designed perimeter fence also combines historical and modern elements and responds sensitively to the topographical conditions of the property.

 

The extension blends in with its surroundings.

A key component of the project is the new development and expansion plan. An underground parking garage integrated into the hillside provides six parking spaces, including electric vehicle charging stations. It is connected to the building via an accessible route and is seamlessly integrated into the garden landscape thanks to a roof covered with lush greenery.

This preserves the property’s prestigious character while also meeting the functional requirements of a modern residence.

 

Sustainable technology for historic buildings

The further development of existing buildings makes an important contribution to resource-efficient construction. At the State Residence of Kuwait, the preservation and renovation of the historic building structure were combined with optimization of the building envelope and modern building technology.

A heat pump with a capacity of 75 kW and a photovoltaic system consisting of 20 modules with a total capacity of 9 kWp support the building’s energy-efficient supply. The green roof on the underground parking garage further contributes to the high-quality integration of the addition into the outdoor space.

 

Integrated expertise from the DELTA Group

Delta Pods Architects was responsible for Architectural Planning and Design Author’s Supervision. Additional services included the tendering, awarding and invoicing, construction supervision for the construction trades, HVAC, and electrical engineering, as well as planning and construction site coordination in accordance with the health and safety coordination. Structural engineering and building physics were handled by VATTER & Partner.

The result is a high-quality ensemble that combines historically significant building fabric worthy of preservation, contemporary architectural interventions, and sustainable building systems.
