What do IPD (integrated project management) and sustainability have in common?
05. March 2026
When we talk about sustainability, we often think first of technology, certifications, or regulatory requirements.
However, whether sustainable transformation succeeds is rarely determined by technology alone—it is determined by the structures and decision-making logic of our projects.
In the construction industry in particular, we know how sustainable construction works from a technical perspective.
The real challenge lies elsewhere:
Do our project cultures create the conditions for this knowledge to be consistently implemented?
This is where the connection to IPD comes in.
IPD focuses on the early involvement of all key stakeholders, joint goal definition, transparency, and shared responsibility and risks – under the guiding principle of “best for project.”
This changes not only the contract, but also the system behind it:
- Cooperation instead of silo thinking
- Overall optimization instead of individual interests
- Openness to innovation
- Long-term perspective instead of short-term optimization
Sustainability is therefore not just a technical or regulatory issue.
It is a question of attitude – and the way we organize and manage projects.
