Interior Redesign for Blood Plasma Centers under the BIO LIFE Brand

Blood plasma donation centers are not typical healthcare facilities. They are places where healthy people come to help those who need it most. Each donation can save up to three lives – plasma becomes the foundation for treating burns, immune disorders, hemophilia, or severe injuries. The DELTA Group CZ team completed a comprehensive revitalization and interior redesign of 11 BIO LIFE centers in the Czech Republic. We are grateful for the trust placed in us to provide technical support during the revitalization of these healthcare centers and to contribute to their interior architecture. A space where the process of saving many human lives takes place.

Ing. arch. Juraj Bačkor says about the interior concept: “People who come here to donate plasma are not patients – they are volunteers, everyday heroes. Therefore, the environment should not feel cold or institutional. On the contrary, it should express gratitude, warmth, and respect for this act of solidarity. That’s why we created for the Japanese investor Takeda Pharmaceuticals a comprehensive architectural concept for the BIO LIFE center network in the Czech Republic, which transforms the perception of these important places.”

From Sterility to Humanity

Reception Area as First Impression:

  • In contrast to the original spatial layout, the reception was rotated 90° – positioned opposite the entrance, enabling control of the space, where arriving and departing visitors meet
  • The rounded shapes of the reception desk support natural movement through the space – the distinctive yellow color radiates energy and brightens the interior depth
  • It was necessary to screen the staircase from views of the reception monitors – the chosen steel construction with frosted glass allows natural light to penetrate the staircase

Waiting Areas – Space for Comfort:

  • By utilizing the space under the staircase, we created a comfortable waiting area that was missing near the collection hall on the upper floor
  • The former staircase to the upper floor, which no longer serves its original purpose (the entrance was bricked up in the past), proved to be an interesting alternative waiting zone for clients – the space was filled with colorful cushioned seating
  • Modular seating systems allow for individual and group seating with mobile device charging capabilities – we used the operator’s corporate colors

Wood as a Therapeutic Element:

  • Slatted ceilings made of natural wood soften the institutional atmosphere
  • Create visual warmth and acoustic comfort

Lighting as a Tool for Well-being:

  • Combination of natural and artificial light regulates biorhythms
  • LED panels emitting warmer tones mimicking daylight instead of harsh fluorescent lights

Functional Furniture:

  • Lockable lockers provide a sense of security and privacy
  • Ergonomic design respects visitor comfort
  • Every detail designed with donor comfort in mind

Quote from the interior concept author Ing. arch. Juraj Bačkor: “The client requested that we modify the existing collection center spaces to be comfortable, fresh, safe, and simultaneously meet the highest requirements for sterility and maintenance. The selection and design of all furnishings and their surface materials covered by certificates for use in healthcare facilities were adapted to these requirements.

We managed to increase capacity for both waiting clients and clients after donation. In addition to the reception and staircase, we designed custom-made furniture units for the collection hall, which are primarily functional and operated by the collection center staff. These spaces are inherently strictly utilitarian, but we believe they also pay tribute to human solidarity, and clients will be happy to return.”

Technology for Protecting Precious Plasma

As the general contractor for all 11 centers, the DELTA Group CZ team also secured critical technical infrastructure. Our technical specialists installed UPS backup power systems that guarantee uninterrupted operation of blood separators even during power outages, because precious donated plasma simply cannot be lost.

Marcel Mašek, project manager for the center revitalization from a technical perspective, adds: “We paid special attention to the installation of specialized freezer units ‘ICE BOX,’ where donated plasma is stored at -35 °C before distribution to hospitals and clinics. These technologies represent an invisible but vital chain between donor generosity and patient rescue.”

The technology revitalization of all 11 centers took place during full operation in record time. “We typically worked within a timeframe of approximately 10 days per center. I believe this collaboration confirmed our position as a reliable partner for our clients,” added colleague Marcel Mašek. BIO LIFE centers are part of the international network of the Japanese pharmaceutical group Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which operates in several countries including the Czech Republic.

Center implementation also frequently included proposals for technical facility renovation and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) systems upgrades, including air conditioning and smart building solutions.
