Speising Orthopedic Hospital: Successfully Further Developing Existing Healthcare Infrastructure

The ongoing modernization of existing hospitals is one of the most demanding tasks in healthcare construction. Top-quality medical care must be maintained without restriction during construction work, while at the same time new medical requirements, technical developments, and legal regulations are integrated into existing buildings.
DELTA has been tackling precisely this challenge for more than two decades at the Speising Orthopedic Hospital in Vienna.
With the completion of a new recovery room and a modern Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in July 2026, another important milestone has now been reached. These projects are part of the ongoing development of one of Europe’s largest and leading centers of excellence for musculoskeletal disorders and pain.
The Speising Orthopedic Hospital looks back on more than a century of history and has been located at its current site in Vienna-Speising for about 70 years. The historic complex, featuring a church and spacious green spaces, combines tradition with state-of-the-art medicine. Approximately 900 employees care for about 52,000 patients annually and perform between 10,000 and 13,000 orthopedic procedures.
DELTA has been overseeing the hospital’s construction projects (as part of the Vinzenz Group) since 2000, serving as project manager alongside SANTESIS Technisches Gebäudemanagement & Service GmbH. In addition to the completion of a comprehensive renovation in 2009, numerous remodeling, renovation, and expansion projects have been carried out.
Working within an existing building presents particular challenges. All projects are carried out while the hospital remains in operation. Medical processes must not be disrupted, the strictest hygiene standards must be maintained, and, at the same time, requirements related to historic preservation and the building’s historic structure must be taken into account.
These conditions demand precise project control, close coordination among all stakeholders, and a deep understanding of the specific requirements of healthcare facilities.
